How to Interrupt Limiting Beliefs

How to Interrupt Limiting Beliefs

When my colleague Alex and I talked about limiting beliefs, he said something that stuck with me: “It’s like living your life with the handbrake on.”

We all have those moments when we get caught in self-judgment—when we become defensive in a difficult conversation, spiral in our thoughts, or second-guess ourselves out of fear of failure. Our instinct? Push through with willpower.

I’ve done this more times than I can count, and it never works.

The neuroscience of Positive Intelligence has helped me understand why: when our brains are stuck in that negative loop, trying harder actually makes it worse. We need to interrupt the pattern physiologically, not intellectually.

That means tuning into a physical sensation to create space—something as simple as rubbing your two fingers together and focusing all your attention on what that feels like. Even 10-20 seconds can help us reset.

It sounds too simple, but it works because it shifts our brain activation away from the reactive loop, creating just enough space to recognize what’s happening and choose a different response.

We all have limiting beliefs. The key is to catch them in the moment and shift our mindset. 🧠

In this conversation with Alex, we explore how to interrupt these patterns so we can show up as the leaders we actually want to be. ✨

What limiting beliefs do you notice in yourself, and how do you shift your mindset?
