My Journey from School Leader to Executive Leadership Coach

My Journey from School Leader to Executive Leadership Coach

When I talk about my transition from educational leader to executive coach, I don’t think of it as a pivot or career change. Instead, I see it as an expansion, a natural evolution of the work I’ve been doing all along.

Education as a State of Being ✨

Education isn’t really a career; it’s a state of being, a fundamental belief in individual and collective potential. Looking at my years as an educational leader and now as the founder of Katie Rocker Leadership Solutions, I see a continuous thread: helping others discover their capacity for growth and transformation.

Same Skills, Different Settings 🌉

As a school leader, I nurtured teams and created cultures focused on positive growth. I helped educators navigate complex dynamics while keeping student success at the center. Now as an executive coach, I help accomplished leaders leverage their strengths to realize even greater possibilities for success and fulfillment.

The heart of what I do hasn’t changed: I use a strengths-based perspective to create a space where positive transformation can happen.

What makes this approach so powerful are the relationships. In both school leadership and executive coaching, success depends on these connections. The trust I build with leaders, how well I understand their challenges, and how effectively they engage with their vision—all these elements matter deeply. And these relationships aren’t static; they constantly evolve through reflection and action.

Navigating Moments of Doubt

There have been moments of doubt in this transition. Times when I thought it would be simpler to stay in my familiar role as an educational leader rather than venture into executive coaching.

When I check in with myself, I recognize the truth: the skills that made me effective in schools—strategic thinking, developing others, creating safe spaces for honest conversation—are exactly what make for powerful executive coaching.
In both roles, I help individuals and teams tune into their natural strengths, understand where they’re stuck, and foster environments where they can thrive.

The Expanded Container 🌱

What’s beautiful about this evolution is that I haven’t left educational leadership behind—I’ve expanded what I can offer.

I’m not satisfied with surface-level growth. I seek to understand how people are truly developing as leaders who can combat their limiting beliefs and create lasting positive change in their organizations. My goal is always to help leaders move from insight to action so they can lead and live at their best each day.
